Top-Level Ontology: The Problem with Naturalism

چکیده

Much work in ontology has been based on ideas derived explicitly from philosophy. In particular there are two philosophy-based high-level ontologies which have been used to analyse tools and techniques for designing information systems, both deriving from the tradition of realism – one from naturalism (Bunge), the other from Aristotelian common-sense realism (Chisholm). Does it matter which underlying philosophy is used in such cases? We use data modelling as a vehicle to explore this question but what we have to say relates quite generally to information systems analysis and design. We find that naturalism cannot account for the multiple perspectives common in real-world situations and we accordingly recommend that common-sense realism be adopted as underlying philosophy.

Centralized Clustering Method To Increase Accuracy In Ontology Matching Systems

Ontology is the main infrastructure of the Semantic Web which provides facilities for integration, searching and sharing of information on the web. Development of ontologies as the basis of semantic web and their heterogeneities have led to the existence of ontology matching. By emerging large-scale ontologies in real domain, the ontology matching systems faced with some problem like memory con...

The Fundamental Naturalistic Impulse: Extending the Reach of Methodological Naturalism

While naturalistic theories have come to dominate the philosophical landscape, there is still little consensus on what “naturalism” means. I trace the origins of contemporary naturalism to a view, called the “fundamental naturalistic impulse,” that originates in Quine’s turn against Carnap and which I take to be necessary for naturalism. In light of this impulse, some “substantively naturalisti...

Matching domain and top-level ontologies via OntoWordNet

Matching domain and top-level ontologies is an important task but still an open problem in the ontology matching field. The main difficulties are particularly due to their different levels of abstraction. In this paper, we propose an approach that exploits existing alignments between WordNet and top-level ontologies, as an intermediate layer, and that relies on the notion of context of concepts...

Validating Top-level and Domain Ontology Alignments using WordNet

Matching domain and top-level ontologies is an important task but still an open problem in the ontology matching field, particularly due to their different levels of abstraction. Beyond that, validating candidate alignments is crucial before exploiting them within ontology construction and integration processes involving such kinds of ontologies. This paper concerns the automatic validation of ...

Naturalism and Ontology: a Reply to Dale Jacquette†

For many years now, philosophical naturalism has enjoyed the status of orthodoxy in the Western academy; and it is widely recognized among theists as one of the most important sources of opposition to belief in God. In World Without Design: The Ontological Consequences of Naturalism, I raised two main objections against naturalism. First, I argued that there is an important sense in which natur...
